The fish eat their food and digest it. Everything that they cannot use, they excrete back into the water.
The water is fed into a box via a long pipe. The plants grow in small baskets above the box. The roots protrude through the baskets into the water and pull out the substances excreted by the fish. The purified water then runs back into the aquarium.
The plants can be harvested to feed the zoo residents. Some fish also eat from the plants.
The water from the boxes is so clean that it no longer has to be filtered. It can serve as a good habitat for the fish.
Aquaponic facilities combine the cultivation of plants with the breeding of aquatic animals. There are already large plants that produce a lot of food.
